Mustafa Eren Güzel, a first-year student of our university's Turkish Music Department, and Semih Özdemir, another faculty member of the Turkish Music Department, were deemed worthy of an award by a jury of respected names from among over 300 candidate works in a composition competition organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in cooperation with YETEV in honor and memory of Prof. Dr. Alaeddin Yavaşça, one of the important figures of Turkish music. In this competition, organized with the aim of adding new works to the Turkish music repertoire and encouraging new composers, Güzel was awarded FIRST PLACE with his work in the Şîvenümâ makam and murabba composition form, while Özdemir was awarded an HONORABLE MENTION with his work in the Şeddisaba makam and song form.
At the ceremony held at the historical Atlas Cinema in Beyoğlu, which also bears important witness to the history of Turkish music, the winning works were performed by leading soloists of our time such as Umut Akyürek, Bekir Ünlüataer, Dilek Türkan, Atakan Akdaş, Güzin Değişmez and Murat Irkılata, accompanied by the Istanbul State Turkish Music Ensemble under the artistic direction of Ferruh Yarkın. Our valuable student Mustafa Eren Güzel's composition Şîvenümâ, which was appreciated for the first place, was performed by a powerful choir consisting of all soloists after Neyzen Emin Dede's famous prelude in the same makam.
